Yes sir
23 July 2007 6:24 amIN his previous life, Pat Carey, minister of state with responsibility for drug strategy, was a teacher and deputy principal.
And there's more than a whiff of his former occupation when he lays out his attitude to a compulsory national register of mobile phones.
For the benefit of those not paying attention at the back, the minister said: "If you've nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear. There may well be confidentiality or civil liberties issues but there are lives of people at stake as well, which I believe overrides any of those."
Class dismissed.

Fiver says Carey has something to hide? Can we discover what it is?

If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear.
That can easily come across as a rational, sane argument but in reality if you accept it for one thing, you must accept it for anything.
Constant phone tapping for all citizens? If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear.
Full monitoring of all online activity? If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear.
Mandatory CCTV in every home in Ireland? If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear.
The same applies for his further comments about lives at risk – there are a lot of civil liberties that, if curtailed, could save lives… If everyones’ right to privacy was removed lives would certainly be saved, so should we get working on taking that away too?

Someone needs to speak out about this, pronto. Carey needs to be quickly challenged as do the Civil Servants once more pushing this.
